Maritime capital of Russia opens a new square to commemorate the name of Academician Pashin, outstanding scientist and naval architect

28 july 2016

Valentin M. Pashin (1937–2013), outstanding Russian scientist and naval architect, Academician of Russian Academy of Sciences, Hero of the Russian Federation, devoted all his 54-year long career to Krylov Centre, including over two decades of successful directorate. In 2014, the small square near Krylov Centre was named after him: Academician Pashin Square.

The memorial opened at this square on July 29, 2016 made Academician Pashin Square a notable place of St. Petersburg as a maritime capital of Russia. This memorial consists of two main focal points. The first one is the stela perpetuating the memory of Academician Pashin and incorporated into the fence circumscribing the perimeter of Krylov Centre territory. This stela is formed by two plates: one of them is granite-clad and bears a commemorating inscription in raised bronze letters, another one is a bronze bas-relief depicting the figure of Academician Pashin.

Just opposite the stela, across the street, there is a small recreation site decorated with naval anchors and anchor chains. A short alley connects it with the second focal point of the memorial: a real propeller of a nuclear submarine. The stela, the site and the anchor are all located on one axis highlighting the integral unity of the entire triad.

The memorial at Academician Pashin square was meant as a tribute of respect to all the naval architects of St. Petersburg who made inestimable contribution to progress of Russian shipbuilding in the past, and also to their present successors who shape the future of Russian Navy today.

The opening ceremony was attended by the heads of ministries and agencies related to shipbuilding industry, city administration, top-rank Navy officials, and also by directors of various shipbuilding enterprises and organizations.
